Poças is a Portuguese family business producing Porto and DOC Douro wines. It is proudly in the hands of the family of the same name that created it more than a century ago, therefore considered “the most Portuguese side of the history of the Douro vineyard. It is one of the rare Porto Wine companies that was born Portuguese and has been in possession of the same family since being founded”.
Born in 1918, by the hands and courage of Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior who, over time, would win over the family with his knowledge and passion for the world of wine. Currently Poças is managed by the 4th generation of the family: Maria Manuel Maia (responsible for the areas of Oenology and Wine Grower), Paulo Pintão (Production and Administrative / Financial area) and Pedro Poças Pintão (Commercial and Marketing area).
The company's head office is in the historic centre of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Visitors' Center is also located, open to the public since 2016.
Currently Poças has three Quintas [Farms], with a total area of 100 hectares (76 hectares of vineyards in production), each located in a different area of the Região Demarcada do Douro [Douro Demarcated Region]: Quinta das Quartas, which makes up the wine making center where all the wines pass through (Baixo Corgo), Quinta de Santa Bárbara, with the renowned Vinhas Velhas (Cima Corgo) and Quinta de Vale de Cavalos, next to the Ribeira de Teja and with the altitude and soil of xist and granite that characterize it (Douro Superior).
With a spirit continually reinforced by the growing recognition of its products all over the world, Poças walks with its eyes set on the future, combining the knowledge of an elderly centenarian with the strength and audacity that runs in the younger generation.
In 2014 Poças began a partnership with Hubert de Boüard, the renowned French winemaker, owner of Château Angélus (Saint-Emilion) and La Fleur de Boüard (Lalande-de-Pomerol) in Bordeaux, with great experience and knowledge in the production of white and red wines of superior quality, together with his right-hand man Philippe Nunes.
This partnership reflects the brand's firm commitment to investing in the quality of DOC Douro wines, and translates into ongoing monitoring and periodic visits focused not only on oenology, but also on viticulture.
Inspiration comes from, as it always has, the unparalleled terroir of the Douro, and resilience is the middle name of the family, so Poças is more than ready to live and celebrate another 100 years of life.
